Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered numerous other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no indication as to its source; authorities are presently not aware of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
City officials announced they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A high-ranking representative said the vandalism made him stunned and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a gunman targeting residents of migrant background in five years prior.
