Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist a thread holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, but then he publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he could resign were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or imploding.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived originally under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His True Position

Perhaps the manager was still trying to identify the nature of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
