Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
