The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
