Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
