One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year break that began in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with others alternatively covering more material or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
