Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
