The Trump movement's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his intentions for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and this week a study projected his energy policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no other president would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying large sections of the executive mansion to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.
We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' toward 'the meek shall die of cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into a figure of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, however it is still disturbing through similar means, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior that I grew up with, as conceptually the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or agnostics or nones. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably not the story of a powerful ruler arising; rather, a baby is born to homeless parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to present the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the assailant; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever someone steals your jacket you ought to provide the person your additional clothing also.
The obvious and direct truth that Christ of the gospels requests a kind of radical love centered on the poor is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be contained. In the fifties it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Best Within Us
So I have been inspired to witness the persistent defiance against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the movement that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags throughout each rally and appeals to the best parts in US history.
We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you welcome them and embrace them or reject?
America is best defended, to put it differently, by relationship to the highest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is optimally secured through connection to elements that cause it to be special and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In neither case does it mean pretending the worst of both America and Christianity was nonexistent; it means both humility and belief, a blend that serious American Christians should be comfortable with.
